Technology is improving at a rampant rate. What we see today is merely the tip of the iceberg. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an unavoidable aspect of our lives and our careers.
With longer lifespans, which, conversely means a lengthened career path, we can no longer use the excuse that technology is for the young.
Therefore, staying relevant has never been more important in this day and age. Of course, we can’t all be masters of AI and tech. In fact, we don’t need to be that in order to advance our careers.
Here are three broad ways in which you might be able to contribute and increase your value to your company:
1. Offer to take on new projects
Every business, at every stage, has room for growth. One way in which you can be proactive is to have a conversation with your boss over coffee and try to understand the pain points in which the company is currently facing that is hindering its growth.
Perhaps the company needs to improve its branding, or maybe, it needs to conduct training for its newcomers. Discussing with your boss on how you might be able to take on a new project to address these pain points to add value to the company. Doing so will elevate the quality of your contribution, and, thereafter, your significance in the company.
2. Network
Try to attend networking sessions, where you can feel and reconnect with the pulse of the industry. If you find yourself uncomfortable with meeting new people, try to convince yourself that you are attending these events to receive updates on developments within the industry.
I find that realigning my focus does give me the motivation to step out of my comfort zone sometimes, maybe this might work for you as well.
Attending networking sessions also indicates your willingness to seek new experiences and opportunities with like-minded individuals. Some might find it an excellent way to seek advice from highly experienced individuals or successful businessmen, which may vastly help you in mapping out the next steps in your life or career.
3. Find a mentor
Mentors are important for many reasons.
They have a wealth of wisdom to impart, as well as assist in your personal and professional development.
It is also generally observed that having a mentor who is of a higher position in the company may positively influence your chances in attaining a promotion.
